Science Fiction Melodrama at its Finest

Captain Swift and the Invasion From Dimension X is a science fiction melodrama serialized in 12 cliffhanger chapters, created & directed by Seth Iniguez, and brought to the stage by the Planet X Players. Between these serials will be additional short performances. Captain Swift is running throughout April, 2010, at the Bug Theater at 3654 Navajo Street, in Denver, Colorado, USA, Planet Earth, Solar System, Milky Way Galaxy. Show times are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturdays, April 2nd through April 24th. Tickets are $10, $8 with student or military ID, and $5 for kids 12 and under. For reservations call the Bug Theatre at (303) 477-5977. Load up your entire species in a handy warp-capable starship and come be entertained!

Xerxes Klatar, evil ambassador from Dimension X, plots to assassinate the President of the Galaxy with a robot duplicate of the First Lady. Meanwhile, Captain Swift and the officers of the Galactic Defense Corps rush to rescue the galaxy from an extra-dimensional invasion. To save the day, the heroes must survive a crash landing on a dangerous planet, escape from Klatar’s dungeon, fight a hostile alien, overcome a malicious computer system, and survive countless more dangers that the evil agents of Dimension X put in their path.

Captain Swift creator/director Seth Iniguez’s background in game design and science fiction writing segued to writing sketch comedy and performing for Planet X Players beginning in 2003. Since then, Iniguez has involved himself other significant projects including performing with the stage-blood-soaked neo-kabuki group OFM (Odam Fei Mud), playing supporting roles in independent films, and of course galactic domination.

Planet X Players formed in 2003 from a group of regulars from the Bug Theatre’s Freak Train, an open stage show that has been a fixture of the Denver performing arts scene for nearly 10 years. Seth Iniguez, the group’s founder & creative director, decided to apply his irreverent writing style to the stage, assembling talented individuals crazy enough to help Iniguez pull it off. The five-minute, once-a-month format seemed like the perfect opportunity to tell a continuing story, which was a first for the Freak Train. After the conclusion of the 12-episodic cycle, Planet X Players stayed active, both on the Freak Train stage and beyond, with a variety of comedy, musical, and dramatic skits, often featuring science fiction and fantasy themes. The villains of the play, Xerxes Klatar, played by Seth Iniguez, and his incompetent sidekick Tresdek, played by Linn, have also performed around town as a comedy duo, bringing an extra-dimensional perspective to the quirks of humankind.

Many of the performers from the first run of Captain Swift have returned for the full stage show, including Ryan Pierce as Captain Swift, and Denver’s avant-pop maniac, Little Fyodor, as President of the Galaxy Archibald Proctor. A variety of supporting acts appear between episodes, including the neo-kabuki performance group OFM, the comic magic of Max Mago, the musical puppetry of Pat Angello, saxophone virtuoso Scott Osbourne, and of course, the satirical music of Little Fyodor.

One of the more recent additions to the cast, Meg Spohn Bertoni, went on her first date with Seth Iniguez to watch him perform at the Freak Train. Two years later, the Freak Train stage had yet another first, when Seth proposed to Meg in song. Now the couple is ready to take on the galaxy together, or at least the Denver theater scene.

Bluewater Productions presents a unique horror comic that revolves around existing full-scale monster and alien animatronics in the new series titled “Distortions Unlimited.”

The three issue series is based off of licensed characters crafted by Distortions Unlimited based in Greeley, CO. Distortions is world-renowned for creating shocking props, masks and animatronics that have been the mainstay of the dark amusement industry for the last 30 years. The company is best known for reproducing the 16ft queen alien from the film “Alien” cast from the original molds, as well as designing the stage props for music industry icon Alice Cooper’s Brutal Planet tour.
Daniel Crosier, writer and illustrator on the series, has a unique connection with the project. “I grew up near the Distortions studio in Greeley. I used to tour the studio when I was a kid and was fascinated by their creations. I suggested to Darren Davis the president of Bluewater to partner with Distortions to develop another horror comic. Darren liked the idea, so we approached them with the concept. Distortions was enthusiastic about the partnership and green-lighted the project.”
The entire series focuses on Distortions’ Rage animatronic. Described as half Neanderthal, half beast, and all fury, the Rage is one of Distortions’ most popular characters. Ed Edmunds, president of Distortions elaborates of the protagonist of the books. “Rage has been a fan favorite for years. The sheer size of the piece commands attention and really gives people a good scare. He’s a great character to base the series on.”

The first issue of the series delves into the horror unleashed on the earth with the collapse of a mine. The plot was crafted with multiple, intertwining layers that combine fantasy and true-life events ripped from today’s headlines. Local Denver celebrities, Uncle Nasty and Matt Need from Clear Channel’s KBPI and Allana Rizzo from Rocky Mountain Fox Sports Net have lent their likeness to the project.

Crosier will bring a unique look to the books by illustrating with his watershed technique. All covers and interior pages of the series will be created with graphite on wood poplar panels. Crosier’s influence for the series is Dark Horse’s “B.P.R.D. 1946”. The books will have a high contrast, distressed, organic look.

The creative team will also include veteran inker Peter Palmiotti. Palmiotti has worked for a variety of comic publishers including Marvel Comics, DC Comics, and Image.

The release date is for the first issue of Distortions Unlimited will be December of 2009.
